Use less plastic at home

Plastic has become so integrated into the way we live that it can be pretty daunting to think about how we can cut it out of our lives. City Sea is an environmental organisation campaigning to stop plastic pollution. Their Plastic Free Living Hub includes lots of everyday inspiration for cutting back on plastic. These include tips for plastic-free beauty products, how to reduce the plastic we use when making food and how to change from single-use plastic to resuables.

But there are other ways to reduce our plastic use. It’s common (and can be cheaper) for people to carry a refillable water bottle rather than throwing plastic ones into the rubbish. Have you thought about how what we wear can add to plastics in the environment? City Sea also include a list of 12 ways to reduce plastic pollution, which you can talk about at home or with your friends.

“We are working hard in Greater Manchester to tackle plastic pollution, making it easier for everyone to shop, eat and drink without the pointless plastic. There’s over 800 places to Refill in Greater Manchester from water refill to food on the go and we would encourage everyone to be part of the #RefillRevolution!”

Recycle plastics properly

In Greater Manchester, bottles are the only plastic that is recycled (and the only plastic you should put in your recycling bin).

Watch this video to find out what happens to plastic in Greater Manchester, and read more about why more plastics aren’t yet recycled in our area.

It makes it even more important to try to not use plastic in the first place!

Small changes make a big difference

If everyone one of us made a change, we can make a real impact on reducing plastic pollution. There’s lots of ways to get involved and if you’re looking for inspiration, you’ll find some simple actions to reduce plastic waste on the GMGreenCIty website.

You can also show your support by signing the PlasticFreeGM pledge and by downloading the Refill App to find a place near you to shop, eat a drink near you, without the pointless plastic.
