There are so many benefits that music brings. Not only does it provide immense joy, but it also creates a profound positive impact on mental well-being. As a high school student myself, I regularly practice the piano, which helps relieve the stress of the academic life as well as sharpening my memory, focus, and emotional control.
Some may think practicing instruments as a waste of time, but I hope this article may give them a different perspective. Playing an instrument can not only help with reducing levels of cortisol but also the stress hormone, promoting relaxation and decreasing anxiety.

What does science say?
Now, let’s dive into the science behind it! When playing an instrument, the brain releases a variety of chemicals that contribute to the positive emotional and cognitive effects of music. For example, the “feel-good” neurotransmitter, Dopamine which gives us a sense of accomplishment and motivation as well as giving us a pleasurable and joyful feeling.
Playing an instrument can also reduce stress, due to the release of endorphins, boosting our sense of wellbeing and enjoyment.
Playing music, can trigger the release of serotonin. This chemical contributes to our mood regulation, making us feel the happiness while we trap ourselves into the harmonies music we play.

Connecting with music
Lastly, engaging in activities like playing an instrument in group settings or with others can stimulate oxytocin production, creating a sense of connection as we bond with others.
Besides the chemical effects of playing an instrument, it can also boost memory and help protect against memory loss as we age. Regularly playing music keeps the brain active, improving brain function and potentially reducing the risk of conditions like amnesia.
